“Missing a Story Line, Series 9” by Steven J. Athanas.

Flatlanders, a sculpture supply store and art gallery in Blissfield, MI, hosts an exhibition by area artist Steven J. Athanas.

Steven’s work is a conglomerate of 2D and 3D art. He uses a variety of refurbished, found and unique objects in his work, as well as different mediums in his drawings, paintings and writings. From rusty threads to tissue paper, random objects in nature and clay, he incorporates anything he can get his hands on. His work has been exhibited in New York, Baltimore, Northwest Ohio, Michigan, Chicago, and West Palm Beach.

Athanas has been making music and art professionally for over 5 decades now. He has self-published several books of his drawings and “poems” as well as 3 CDs and a few cassettes of original songs. He received his BA in Arts Education in 2000, taught for a few years and, when jobs dried up, focused on his visual art.

Since then it has expanded into creating mobiles and sculptures by using various papers and attaching them to a metal frame to create fish, birds, humans and abstract shapes. He then paints them in acrylics and coats them with water-based polyurethane for strength and endurance. In keeping with his eclectic works and his musical tastes, these mobiles are in a world of their own.

The gallery: at this stage
Steven describes this new gallery as a “Bit o ‘the old, bit o’ the new, some new mobiles, my series called ‘Missing a story line’ and some 2D and 3D work.” Visitors can expect colorful, wacky, often absurd, but utterly unique works of art. His works undeniably have a personality that art lovers, artists and sculptors have never seen elsewhere. He has shown his work at Flatlanders since 2008.

The gallery is located at 11993 US-223 in Blissfield, Michigan. “As you head towards Adrian on 223, you pass a one-story building that houses all of those crazy, beautiful outdoor sculptures on the property. They’re Flatlanders, ”Athanas said.

The Flatlanders Fine Art Gallery features gift-oriented works with an emphasis on craftsmanship, including prints, jewelry, sculpture, mouth-blown glass, and ornaments. In addition to their store, they offer sculpting services for public and private projects in Ohio and Michigan.

For those who can’t make it to their brick-and-mortar location, Flatlanders offers Online Exhibition: 2020 and the Challenge of Creating. Organized by Athanas himself, the multimodal exhibition includes works by Philip Hazard, Meighen Jackson, Valerie Mann, Chris Stofan and Louie, and began as a means of providing the comforts of art during the pandemic.

Flatlanders is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exhibition will run until August 27e, 2021. For more information on the gallery, visit: https://www.flatlandersculpture.com/
