Adèle’s new album 30 exploded to No.1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, debuting with the most important week of 2021 for all albums, while the set is already the best-selling album of the year. This is the third number 1 for the superstar, after 25 (10 more weeks in 2015-16) and 21 (24 weeks in 2011-12).
30 is Adele’s first album in six years, since its release 25 November 20, 2015.
30 begins with 839,000 equivalent album units earned in the United States during the week ending Nov. 25, according to MRC Data. This is by far the biggest week of the year for a unit-earned album, overtaking Drake’s debut. Boy in love certified, which gained 613,000 units in the week ending September 9.
The Billboard 200 rankings ranks the most popular albums of the week in the United States based on multimeter consumption measured in equivalent album units. Units include album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit is equivalent to an album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported official audio and video streams or 1,250 paid / subscription-on-demand generated by songs from one. album. The 12-track standard edition of the 30 The album was available as a CD, digital album, and black vinyl LP widely at Adele’s official online store in the United States.
Beyond the widely available standard editions of the album and offers from Adele’s online store, the only other variations of the album available in the United States were a Target-exclusive 15-track CD and two variations of LP vinyl – one exclusive to Amazon (an LP vinyl) and the other only available through Walmart (a light colored LP). The Target CD contains three exclusive audio tracks, including a version of the first single from the album “Easy on Me” with Chris Stapleton; the song is from Adele solo on all other versions of the set. Target is the only US retailer with bonus audio tracks for 30.
30Sales of 692,000 in the first week not only mark the biggest sales frame of 2021, but also the biggest selling week for an album since 2017. The last time an album sold more than ‘copies in a single week was when Taylor Swift’s Reputation debuted with 1.216 million copies sold in the week ending November 16, 2017 (reflected in charts dated December 2, 2017).
In its first week, Reputation was not available in its entirety on streaming services, and its digital album was sold exclusively through Apple’s iTunes Store and Swift’s online store. The album was also available in two Target-exclusive zine / CD editions, but not on vinyl or cassette. No bonus tracks were featured on any version of the album during its week of release. Sales for the first week of Reputation were also likely bolstered by fan participation in the Taylor Swift Tix program powered by Ticketmaster Verified Fan, where purchasing an album would help ensure better access to Swift’s upcoming stadium tour. (Such a promotion is no longer eligible to be counted towards mapped sales, effective October 9, 2020.)
In terms of flow, 30 debuted with 141,000 SEA units – totaling 185.39 million on-demand streams of the album’s 12 tracks. This is the fourth biggest streaming debut of 2021 for a one-woman album, following the first weeks of Red (Taylor version) (303.23 million), that of Olivia Rodrigo Sour (300.73 million) and Summer Walker’s Always Above (201.07 million). (Each of these numbers is a weekly stream total for each album’s songlist. The sum of Red [Taylor’s Version] reflected 30 leads in its first week, Sour was 11, Always Above was 20 and 30 at 12.)
Comparatively, Adele’s latest album, 25, was not available to listen in full on streaming services during its first week of release. 25 didn’t arrive in full on streamers until seven months later, in June 2016.
30 was kicked off by the single “Easy on Me,” which spent four weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 song chart (via the most recently released list, dated November 27). The album was also supported by a 90-minute special on CBS TV on November 14, in which Adele performed songs in concert and sat down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Adele also recently graced the covers of American magazines. Vogue and Rolling stone.
Swift Red (Taylor version) dropped from # 1 to # 2 in its second week, with 159,000 equivalent album units earned (down 74%). Drake’s Old No.1 Boy in love certified climbs from 5 to 3 with 53,000 units (although down 7%), Silk Sonic’s An evening with Silk Sonic dips from 2 to 4 in its second week with 50,000 (down 52%), Morgan Wallen’s record Dangerous: the double album climbs from 6 to 5 with 48,000 units (up 6%) and the former leader of Summer Walker Always Above drops from 4 to 6 with just under 48,000 (down 25%).
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ second collaborative album, Raise the roof, debuted at No.7 on the Billboard 200. This is the ninth top 10 for Plant as a solo artist and the fifth for Krauss (including his work with Union Station). Raise the roof follows Plant and Krauss’ first team, on the 2007 album Sand rising, which debuted and peaked at No. 2. The ensemble went on to win the Grammy for Album of the Year. (Legendary rock band Led Zeppelin, with Plant as a member, went for 13 top 10s on the tally, including seven No.1s, starting in 1969.)
Raise the roof begins with just over 40,000 equivalent album units earned. Of this, album sales represent 38,000, SEA units include 2,000 (equivalent to 2.17 million on-demand streams of songs on the album) and TEA units have less than 1,000.
The former number 1 of Olivia Rodrigo Sour climbs from 11 to 8 with 40,000 equivalent album units earned (up 23%).
Michael Bublé’s achievements Xmas The album returned to the top 10, while the album, released for the first time in 2011, ranks 22-9 with 39,000 equivalent album units earned (up 77%). The set gets a boost thanks to the promotion around a 10th anniversary deluxe reissue released on November 19, which includes additional tracks.
