TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX) – Campfires and propane-powered appliances have been banned from state parks in northern Idaho, while other federal agencies have extended fire restrictions in the southern Idaho as fire conditions worsen.
In the Magic Valley, the Bureau of Land Management has announced that all federal, state and private forest lands will be subject to Stage 1 fire restrictions by Friday, July 16 (see full details below) at Blaine, Camas, Cassia, Custer, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Owyhee and Twin Falls counties. All lands in the Twin Falls BLM District and State of Idaho north of Highway 20 to the northern limit of the Sawtooth National Forest; from Hill City east to the Visitor Center at the Craters of the Moon National Monument Park. Sawtooth National Forest Lands remain under Stage 1 restrictions in this area.
Shoshone Zone-
All land in the Twin Falls BLM District and State of Idaho north of I-84 to Highway 20; from King Hill east to the American Falls Dam.
Three streams area-
All lands in the Twin Falls BLM District and the State of Idaho south of I-84 to the Idaho / Nevada border, including lands managed by the Twin Falls BLM District south of the Idaho border; west of Route 93 to Bruneau Canyon.
Cassia Zone-
All land in the Twin Falls BLM District and State of Idaho from I-84 / I-86 south to the Idaho / Utah / Nevada border; east of Highway 93 to the Cassia County / Onieda County line. Sawtooth National Forest Lands remain within Stage 1 restrictions in this area, including the Raft River Mountains located in northwest Utah.
Under the Stage 1 fire restrictions, the following acts are not allowed on state lands, state endowment lands, private forest lands and federally managed protected lands until further notice:
- Build, maintain, assist or use a fire, campfire or stove fire except in a designated recreational site and in a permanent concrete or metal fire ring, or on private land, and only in a structure provided by the owner.
- Smoking, except inside a closed vehicle, building or designated recreation site or when stationary in an area at least three feet in diameter that is sterile or free of any flammable material .
The following are exemptions from the Stage 1 fire restrictions:
- Persons holding a written permit that specifically authorizes the otherwise prohibited act.
- Persons using a fire powered only by fuels made from liquid petroleum or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Such devices, including propane campfires, may only be used in an area free from flammable materials.
- Individuals carrying out activities in designated areas where the activity is specifically authorized by a posted written notice.
- Any federal, state or local officer or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the exercise of an official function.
- All land within the city limits is exempt.
- Other exemptions specific to each agency.
