Depp teams up with Jeff Beck for cover album
Johnny Depp and English guitarist Jeff Beck will release an album of mostly covers next month, after they hit the stage together for the ex-Yardbird’s UK tour.
Entitled “18”, the 13-track album will be released on July 15. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor played alongside Beck across multiple UK locations over the past two weeks.
“It’s almost like you’ve gone through a record store and jumped from genre to genre,” beck told Reuters on Friday, saying they started working on the album at Depp in France. “There’s a couple Motown, there’s a couple Beach Boy covers… Sounds pretty good for a home recording.”
Depp and Beck have been recording music since 2019 for the album, which also includes two original songs by Depp, who has his own band, the Hollywood Vampires.
18 tracks
“Midnight Walker” (Davy Spillane)
“Death and Resurrection Show” (Killing Joke)
“Time” (Dennis Wilson)
“Sad Motherf*** in ‘Parade” (original by Johnny Depp)
“Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)” (Beach Boys)
“It’s a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr” (original by Johnny Depp)
“Carolina, No” (Beach Boys)
“Ooo Baby Baby” (The Miracles)
“What’s Going On” (Marvin Gaye)
“Venus in Fur” (The Velvet Underground)
“Let It Be Me” (The Everly Brothers)
“Stars” (Janis Ian cover)
“Isolation” (John Lennon cover) – digital and CD version only
“We slowly built songs that we love. We didn’t really do any design,” beck said. “He has…a very distinctive (voice) and he gets music and I hope I’ve allowed him to open up to songs that he wouldn’t otherwise be interested in.”
From the verdict, Depp said the jury gave him back his life. beck said: “I hope I helped him a little bit to have some kind of understanding, closeness and banter, and keep having fun.”
