Maui Friends Help Books Find The Best Home | News, Sports, Jobs

Friends of the Maui Library volunteer William Sakugawa-Souza tidies up books Wednesday morning at the Puunene store. Sakugawa-Souza said he enjoyed volunteering his time at the store where most books and CDs cost a quarter. “I like to look at different books and I like to read” he said. “I helped with the painting and the pressure washing. The Maui Friends of the Library Puunene store is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, while the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center store in Kahului is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, and at the Maui Outlets in Lahaina from noon to 6 p.m. daily.

Sakugawa-Souza helps 11-year-old Athena Grond, a sixth-grade student at Kalama Middle School, and her mother Stacey Grond unload a box of their books donated to Puunene on Wednesday. “There are good books here” said Stacey Grond. “I had a hard time going through them. The best thing is that they go to someone who will appreciate them.
