Missouri Tax Free Weekend 2021: Dates of the month and qualifying items

The Missouri Duty Free Weekend began on Friday, August 6 at 12:01 a.m. and will run through Sunday, August 8 at 11:59 p.m. of Missouri Duty Free Weekend altogether.


Items eligible for tax exempt status in Missouri

Clothing $ 100 or less per item and school supplies $ 50 or less qualify for tax exempt status. Other non-taxable items include computer software of $ 350 each or less, personal computers up to $ 1,500 each, computer peripherals up to $ 1,500 each, and graphing calculators up to $ 150 each.

Missouri Notes on Eligible Clothing:

any clothing intended to be worn on or around the human body, including, but not limited to, disposable infant or adult diapers and footwear. The term includes, but is not limited to, fabrics and other materials used to make school uniforms or other school clothing. Items normally sold in pairs do not have to be separated to qualify for the exemption. The term does not include watches, watch straps, jewelry, handbags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, scarves, ties, headbands or belt buckles …

With respect to school supplies qualifying for tax-exempt status, Missouri notes:

any item normally used by students in a standard classroom for educational purposes, including, but not limited to textbooks, notebooks, paper, writing instruments, pencils, art supplies, rulers, book bags, backpacks, pocket calculators, graphing calculators, chalk, maps, and globes. The term does not include watches, radios, CD players, headphones, sports equipment, cell or office phones, copiers or other office equipment, furniture or accessories. School supplies also include graphing calculators valued at $ 150 or less and computer software with an assessed value of $ 350 or less.

The following are examples of what qualifies as computers and computer peripherals for tax exempt status:

A laptop, desktop, or tower computer system consisting of a “central processing unit, RAM, storage drive, display screen, and keyboard”.

“Devices designed for use with a personal computer,” according to the Missouri website. This includes:

Items that do not qualify for tax exempt status in Missouri

In Missouri, clothing that costs more than $ 100 per item and school supplies that cost more than $ 20 per item are NOT eligible for tax free status.
