Back-to-school supplies are filling the aisles of many stores. Keep in mind that Missouri’s back-to-school sales tax exemption begins by law on the first Friday in August and continues through the following Sunday. This year’s event begins on August 5. Certain back-to-school items, such as clothing, school supplies and computers, are exempt from sales tax for the three-day period, and yes, even supplies like disposable diapers for infants. The sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on August 5. Kansas does not provide a back-to-school sales tax holiday. COMPLETE LIST OF ITEMS EXEMPT FROM SALES TAXClothing: Any item of clothing intended to be worn on or around the human body, including but not limited to disposable infant or adult diapers and footwear. The term includes, but is not limited to, fabrics and other materials used to make school uniforms or other school clothing. Items normally sold in pairs do not need to be separated to qualify for the exemption. The term does not include watches, watchbands, jewelry, handbags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, scarves, ties, headbands or belt buckles. Personal computer: A portable, desktop, or tower computer system that consists of a central processing unit, random access memory, storage drive, display screen, keyboard, and devices designed to be used with personal computer, such as disk drive, memory module, compact disk drive, daughter card, digitizer, microphone, modem, motherboard, mouse, multimedia speaker, printer, scanner, mono- user, single user operating system, sound card or video card. Personal computers and computer peripherals cannot exceed $1,500.
