The gold standard of SUVs

The all-new 2022 Land Rover Range Rover is a British full-size SUV offered with two wheelbases and in two- and three-row configurations for up to seven passengers. Today’s redesigned Range Rover is a fifth-generation model, following a line of predecessors introduced in 1969. Early models used a body-on-frame chassis, a rugged 4×4 powertrain and an interior designed for utility – vinyl seats and interiors could be watered down.

Today’s Range Rover is built with a unibody platform, an even more capable 4×4 system and a well-appointed interior that rivals the best luxury cars on the road. Capable, luxurious and with well-deserved cachet, the all-new 2022 Land Rover Range Rover is recognized as the benchmark for SUVs.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Powertrain

Standard P400 models feature a 3.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged inline-6 engine with 48-volt hybrid assist. This Ingenium family powertrain is rated at 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It provides a 0-60 mph sprint in just under 6 seconds and will deliver up to 26 mpg on the highway. P530 models feature a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. Sourced from BMW, the engine is rated at 532 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The V8 delivers a 0-60 mph sprint in just over 4 seconds while gaining 21 mpg on the highway. An 8-speed automatic torque converter is standard on all models.

The Range Rover features Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) controlled by Land Rover’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) system. The computerized system constantly monitors each tire’s grip and distributes it between the front and rear axles (and across the axle) to optimize on-road and off-road traction. Additionally, all Range Rover models are also fitted with an active locking rear differential which adds even more off-road capability.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Interior

It’s a challenge to find a cabin as luxurious as that of the all-new Range Rover, whatever the price. Land Rover decorates the cabin with superb leathers, fine woods and premium metal trim. The overall appearance is upscale and modern – warm and welcoming – despite a strong integration of innovative technologies. The operator faces a sleek 13.7-inch Interactive Driver Display, which offers several different visual layouts (including a conventional analogue look). Infotainment is projected onto a 13.1-inch floating screen that controls nearly all vehicle functions. There are analogue dials for climate control, driving modes and a dedicated audio volume control, all well positioned and easy to use. The shifter is a raised rocker on the center console (the flush start/stop button is to its right).

The front seats are very comfortable and support all body types. Head, shoulder and legroom is generous for the two front occupants (the seat controls are on the doors, making them easy to use). The second row is almost as comfortable as the front, with outboard passengers seated in seats that closely mirror the seats in front of them in design and support. The middle passenger sits on a flat cushion, but that’s more than enough for short trips. The Range Rover offers a third row, but it’s still not adult-sized – kids will find it fine. Those looking for the ultimate in luxury should opt for the SV Signature Suite in the Long Wheelbase (LWB) model. It has 24-way reclining seats in the second row, with massage function. A deployable club table allows passengers to work while traveling in first class.

How does the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover work?

Land Rover has paid a lot of attention to on-road driving dynamics, and their hard work has paid off. The vehicle uses the brand’s MLA-Flex architecture, which is aluminum-intensive (over 75% of the structure is alloy). As a result, the vehicle is lighter and chassis stiffness is impressive – this provides a solid base for the suspension and all but eliminates squeaks and rattles inside the cabin. The Range Rover comes standard with twin-valve air suspension, 48-volt electronic anti-roll bars and four-wheel steering. Additionally, the vehicle can be raised up to 11.6 inches of ground clearance (or lowered 5.7 inches for easier entry/exit). Wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches in diameter.

The 2022 Range Rover drives surprisingly well on the road – it’s one of the most comfortable SUVs I’ve driven in a long time. It’s nimble and easy to maneuver even on twisty roads (credit low profile tires and rear axle steering) despite its sizable size. The overall theme is luxury, so the ride is comfortable and never harsh. Thanks to a low drag coefficient (Land Rover claims an impressive 0.30 Cd., making it the most aerodynamically efficient SUV on the road), laminated glass and plenty of noise insulation, the cabin is quiet on the road . Off-road, the vehicle can be driven on dirt roads, up steep hills, over rocks and through snowdrifts without breaking a sweat – its only limitation is tire choice (low-profile summer or all-season tires will reduce ability). And if anyone plans to cross a river or stream, the Range Rover is capable of wading through 34.5 inches of water.

How much does the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover cost?

Land Rover offers two models in the US market (a PHEV is coming for 2023). The Range Rover P400 SE (SWB), with a mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6, starts at around $105,000. The Range Rover P530, with a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8, starts at around $123,000. The top-of-the-line model is the Range Rover P530 First Edition (LWB), which has a suggested retail price of around $170,000.
